What do the digitization of agriculture, differential equations and electromagnetic radiation have in common? These are three fields of outstanding pre-scientific work with which students from the Nuremberg metropolitan region have won a Dr. Hans Riegel subject prize. A total of 18 papers in the subjects of biology, chemistry, geography, computer science, mathematics and physics were awarded prizes by the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation.

This year, the awards ceremony was once again held in the usual festive setting. For the past 14 years, the awards have honored particularly good pre-scientific work, and the range of topics addressed by the 169 participating high school graduates was, as usual, remarkable.

A jury made up of researchers from FAU evaluated the work according to scientific criteria, whereby particularly creative topics and a clearly recognizable practical contribution – for example in the form of experiments – were important factors in the awarding of the prizes.

The Dr. Hans Riegel prizes are endowed with 600 Euros for first place, 400 Euros for second place and 200 Euros for third place in each subject. In addition, the schools of the first-place winners receive a non-cash prize of around 250 Euros in recognition of the support provided to the students by their respective subject teachers.

The 2023 prize winners for physics:

1st place: Isabella Helm from Georg-Wilhelm-Steller-Gymnasium, with the topic “The physical causes of impaired oxygen uptake and investigation of the effects on performance using selected parameters”
