Physikalisches Kolloquium: Prof. Shaul Katzir – Physics and technology in the road to sonar and the quartz clock
Date: November 11, 2026Time: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pmLocation: Hörsaal H, Staudtstr. 5, 91058 Erlangen
Titel: Physics and technology in the road to sonar and the quartz clock
Abstract:
For 35 years piezoelectricity was known only within physics. Then between 1916 and 1927 three major technologies based on it were invented and developed: sonar, crystal frequency control and the quartz clock. By following five phases in the physical and technological research that led to these devices and methods, the talk will illustrate the interaction between different kinds of research in the development of science-based technologies.
