What do oat milk, the blue morpho butterfly and the Nuremberg Reichswald forest have in common? They are three topics of outstanding pre-scientific work with which pupils from Franconia have won a Dr. Hans Riegel prize. The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation awarded prizes to a total of 18 projects in the subjects of biology, chemistry, geography, computer science, mathematics and physics.

As in previous years, the range of topics was impressive. A total of 229 high school graduates took part. A jury made up of FAU researchers assessed the work according to scientific criteria, with particularly creative topics and a clearly recognizable practical component – for example in the form of experiments – being important factors in the award.

Winner Physics:

  1. 1st place: Masato Kian Niklas from Clavius-Gymnasium, Bamberg, with the topic “Experiments in medical physics using the example of a pulse oximeter”
  2. 1st place: Alexandra Simion from Willstätter-Gymnasium, Nuremberg, with the topic “The Marangoni effect using the example of a drop of water and alcohol on oil”
  3. 1st place: Mustafa Kilic from the FOS/BOS Aschaffenburg with the topic “Theoretical analysis and practical testing of water rockets”

The Clavius-Gymnasium received the non-cash prize for student support.

The Dr. Hans Riegel prizes in each subject are endowed with 600 Euros for first place, 400 Euros for second place and 200 Euros for third place. In addition, the schools in first place will receive a non-cash prize worth around 250 Euros in recognition of the supervision of the seminar papers by the respective subject teachers.
