Synthetic Wavelength Holography – Imaging around Corners and through Scattering Media at the Physical Space- Bandwidth Limit

Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) imaging has recently emerged as a new and exciting challenge in the computational imaging community. The goal is to produce an image of objects hidden from direct view solely by observing light reflected by scattering surfaces that are visible to the camera. Robust solutions can enable unprecedented possibilities, e.g., in autonomous driving, medical imaging, early-warning navigation systems, or inspection.
However, the presence of a scatterer in the imaging path between an object and an observer destroys the visual acuity of conventional imaging systems. We present an approach to circumvent the deleterious effects of scattering by exploiting spectral correlations in scattered wavefronts. Our Synthetic Wavelength Holography (SWH) principle can recover a holographic representation of hidden targets with high resolution over a wide field of view. The method accommodates a wide variety of scattering mechanisms and operates at the physical space-bandwidth limit of imaging in the presence of scatter.
In this talk, I will introduce our novel SWH method, show measurement results, and discuss the related space-bandwidth tradeoffs.
